This program was created by Robert M. Mellendorf from the "Department of Geology, Lehigh University" to help troubleshooting and debugging GPSScan. It can be downloaded from: http://sourceforge.net/projects/gps-tools/ and later included in the "GPSScan v1.3" package as part of GPSTools.dll.A discussion forum is also available for it at http://forum.gpsdrive.com/. The log is from a Garmin Nuvi 860 GPS unit that was installed with GPSTools to a Windows XP SP3 system. General usage of GPSScan is essentially a matter of configuring a datasource and then writing a text file that describes the exact coordinates of the points you wish to retrieve. These coordinates can be either latitude and longitude or, more commonly, UTM coordinates. The more efficient route is usually to convert from one format to the other before sending to GPSScan. Any existing files on your computer making use of UTM coordinates should also be converted to lat/lon before using them with GPSScan. GPSScan is a program that you use to do the actual retrieving of the coordinates. This file will be sent to GPSScan and then, after a period of several minutes, it will return your results.As shown in the figure below, these results can be displayed in most Windows applications such as Excel.

The basic concept behind GPSTools is very simple: Add GPSTools directory to your program directory and compile with GPSDAT SDK. It adds support for GUI accessing via Win32 API and includes some useful tools for debugging and monitoring GPS data acquisition process.
